Use Cases

What is IRS
Audit Representation?

Getting a letter from the IRS can feel overwhelming. An “audit” simply means the IRS wants to double-check some of your tax information. But even a small issue can snowball into stress, penalties, and sleepless nights.

That’s where audit representation comes in. Instead of you answering the IRS directly, we step in as your advocate. We deal with the IRS on your behalf—handling every call, meeting, and piece of paperwork—while fighting for the best outcome possible.

The facts

What Happens During an IRS Audit?

The IRS sends a letter asking you to verify part of your tax return. The letter lists the items in question, the records the IRS wants, and a deadline.

If the response is incomplete or late, the IRS can decide the issue using only the information it already has, and add tax, penalties and interest.

A complete, one-time response is what keeps a small audit small.

When Is Audit Representation Possible?

Audit representation works best when:

1. You’ve received an audit notice from the IRS.

2. You want a licensed professional to respond on your behalf.

3. You need help gathering documents and building your case.

It’s not a magic “get out of taxes free” card. If you owe taxes, you’ll still need to pay. But with the right representation, penalties may be reduced, negotiations kept fair, and you’ll have the best outcome possible.

How Will the IRS Conduct My Audit?

The IRS runs audits three ways: by mail (a correspondence audit, usually limited to one or two items), at an IRS office (an office audit), or at your home or business (a field audit).

Every audit starts with a letter in the mail. The IRS never starts an audit by email, text, or phone call. A message that claims otherwise is a scam.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

How Far Back Can the IRS Audit Me?

Usually three years from the date you filed your return. That can stretch to six years if a large amount of income was left off the return.

And there is no time limit at all for a year where no return was filed, or where the return was fraudulent.  This is one of the first things we check in your free consultation: which years are actually open, and which ones the IRS can no longer touch.

What If I Don't Have Receipts for What I Claimed?

Missing records are common, and they are not fatal. Records can often be rebuilt from bank statements, card statements, and other third-party sources, and the tax law allows reasonable reconstruction in many situations.

The wrong move is guessing, or ignoring the letter. A licensed professional can help you rebuild what the IRS will accept.

How Long Does an IRS Audit Take?

It depends on the type. Mail audits often close within a few months once a complete response is sent. Office and field audits take longer.

The fastest way through any audit is a complete, organized response the first time. Back-and-forth with the IRS is what drags audits out.

Do I Need Audit Representation if I’ve Done Nothing Wrong?

Yes, because even honest taxpayers can get audited. Just like you wouldn’t go to court without a lawyer, you shouldn’t face the IRS without a qualified professional.

The IRS may simply want more information, but without the right response, an audit can drag on and create unnecessary stress. That’s where we come in.

Our team knows exactly what the IRS is looking for and how to present it clearly. With us handling the process, your audit moves forward smoothly, and you avoid costly mistakes.

Why Was I Selected for an IRS Audit?

Being selected for an audit doesn’t always mean you've done something wrong.

Often, audits are triggered by automated screening that compares your tax return against statistical norms or connections to other audited entities.

What Are My Rights and How Can I Respond?

You have rights: knowing the reason for the audit, receiving copies of audit files, being represented, and appealing if necessary.

IRS Form 2848 lets you authorize a tax professional (like a CPA, enrolled agent, or attorney) to represent you.
