What is sales tax nexus, and how do I know if I have it?

Nexus is the connection between your business and a state that triggers an obligation to collect and remit its sales tax. It's created in four main ways: physical presence (office, employees, inventory), economic activity (crossing a state's sales threshold, often around $100,000 a year), affiliate relationships, and click-through referrals, and every state sets its own rules.

A nexus study answers the question across all four, state by state, so you're not guessing.

What's the difference between this and just turning on tax collection in Shopify?

Your platform can calculate a rate, but it doesn't tell you where you're legally required to register, whether your specific products are taxable in each state, or which exemptions apply.

Turn collection on in the wrong states and you create liability; leave it off where you owe and you create exposure. The study is the part the software can't do for you.

Don't marketplace facilitators like Amazon handle sales tax for me?

Often for sales on their platform, yes, but it depends on the state, and those sales can still count toward your economic-nexus thresholds for your other channels (your own website, wholesale, etc.).

It's the ideal time. Setting sales tax up correctly before your first sale is the cheapest, cleanest way to do it, it just works from day one, with no amended returns or refund-chasing later.

One thing that trips up even brand-new sellers: don't start collecting in a state before you're registered there. We make sure the order of operations is right.

Do service businesses and contractors really need this?


Often, yes.
Sales tax isn't just for product sellers. Depending on the state and exactly what you do, plenty of services are taxable, and construction and contractor work has its own rules around labor versus materials and real vs. tangible property.

Taxability research answers it for your specific work, so you're not assuming it "doesn't apply" and finding out otherwise.
