Fix My Books is a remote US firm based in Illinois. We keep your books clean and handle the hard tax work: tax planning, sales tax, real estate tax strategy, cross-border tax, and IRS representation. We're led by an Enrolled Agent, which means we don't just prepare your numbers. We can stand between you and the IRS.
Our whole approach comes down to one line. Anyone can do the strategy. We make sure it survives the audit.We'll help you pay the least tax you legally can, and we build the documentation with you all year, so that when the IRS looks, you just hand them the file we already prepared.
We started just like a lot of our clients, with an idea, a vision, and a leap into the unknown. After years of working for other people, we took the chance and started Fix My Books in the middle of a pandemic, on a laptop at a kitchen table.
It was not easy. We answered ad after ad and sent proposal after proposal, and the rejections piled up. After 217 rejections, we landed our first official client. Then a second, a third, and they kept coming, because clients could see we put as much care into their businesses as we do our own.
In 2025 we moved from Canada to Illinois. That meant learning US and international tax for our own move first, the same rules we now handle for clients every day.Then something happened.
More and more people started coming to us with cross-border problems. Canadians moving to the US. Americans with foreign income and assets. These are the tangled situations most firms avoid because they're genuinely hard, and where getting it wrong means brutal penalties.
We had already been through it ourselves, so we knew what the questions felt like from their side of the table. We leaned in.
We're boutique and white-glove on purpose. At a big national firm, the real strategy goes to their biggest clients, and everyone else pays premium fees for commodity tax prep. We think every client deserves the strategy and the attention, so we take on the clients we can genuinely create value for, and we'll tell you honestly if you don't need us.
Today that's real estate tax strategy for investors and high earners, cross-border and international tax for people living between two countries, and representation for people the IRS is already after. The throughline never changes. Do it right, and be able to prove it.

Arielle Smith is a Certified Bookkeeper (CB), a designation issued by the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPB) in the United States, and a Certified Professional Bookkeeper (CPB) through CPB Canada. She leads bookkeeping and payroll compliance at Fix My Books, with a particular specialization in sales tax. She serves as an instructor for TaxCloud's Bootcamp, teaching sales tax compliance to other practitioners. Her work covers day-to-day bookkeeping, payroll, and multi-state sales tax obligations for the firm's clients.
In 2025, Insightful Accountant named her one of the Top 50 International ProAdvisors, and CPB Canada named her Professional Leader of the Year. She was a semi-finalist for the 2024 Forbes 30 Under 30 in Finance. Jason Smith is an Enrolled Agent (EA), a federally authorized tax practitioner with unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service. He also holds the Certified Real Estate Tax Strategist (CRETS) and Certified Tax Resolution Specialist (CTRS) designations. At Fix My Books he leads tax planning, real estate tax strategy, and IRS representation for individuals and businesses. He works on real estate taxation, including REPS, cost segregation, 1031 exchanges, and depreciation recapture. He also handles cross-border and international tax, and tax resolution for clients facing IRS collection or examination.
In November 2024, the American Society of Tax Problem Solvers named him a Rising Star in Tax Resolution. His approach is aggressive on deductions and honest about risk. He'll tell you when a strategy raises your audit odds, then make sure the documentation holds up.
